ASUS P4PE motherboardSeagate Barracuda ATA 120GB hard driveI had my system working fine with winxp and the above motherboard and hard drive (plus a dvd drive and dvd-writer). Except i had one little error on startup involving the power fan speed. It wasn't a big deal, but i tried updating the BIOS to rev. 1002 using the LiveUpdate winxp utility that came with the motherboard. But when i restarted afterward, i got the following error:'a disk read error occurred. Press ctrl-alt-delete to restart'I have never dealt with BIOS updates before and i have no idea what to do. I can't even get into winxp anymore to use that live update program.
Does anyone have any recommendations. I'm really stuck here. Hello Dave mabe we can help, in the Advanced Bios Features-scroll down to the( System Bios Cacheable ) if it is enabled -disable it,try this to see if it stops this error, when this is enabled sometimes it will function ok however, sometimes it will write back to the memory to fast causing an error it really is`nt a problem but you are probably like myself I don`t like errors showing up.
Try this to see if it works, this could be the culprit.Hope you the best with your new board!Feb 19, 2003, 12:00pm EST- -Re: ASUS P4PE rev 1002 gives me disk read error on boot up.

There is a Power Hardware alert thatindicates VCore is low at 1.26V. The system boots into WinXP and istotally stable but Windows indicates that the chip is a 3.06GHz Pentium4 running at 1.60GHz.Needless to say this is NOT OK. I checked the Intel Frequency IDUtility (dowloaded from Intel) and it too indicates a 3.06GHz Pentium 4running at 1.60 GHz.
I have an Antec 400W Power supply. I trieddisconnecting all drives except the BOOT drive and a graphics card withthis CPU. Same problem occurs. I am stumped. Is my power supply toblame? They plug into the same S478socket. But, the way you identify you got a Mobile (other thanusing the processorfinder site), is the multiplier is fixed atx12. Usually, when they first start, the clock is 100MHz, theFSB reads out as FSB400.
100 x 12 = 1200MHz, super-slow. (Onlya mobile chipset properly sets the speed - a desktop chipsetwill give the 1200MHz thing instead.)In your case, the clock is (somehow) at 133MHz.
Maybe you forcedthe CPU clock to 133Mhz, or maybe the BSEL pins on the bottom ofthat particular model of processor are coded that way, I don't knowfor sure. 133 x 12 = 1.6GHz.This kind of processor is best run in a P4C800-E Deluxe. There, you can set the clock manually to 300MHz, the FSB becomes FSB1200,the core speed becomes 3.6GHz. You use the best DDR DRAM available(maybe some TCCD these days), and run the RAM 1:1 at DDR600.It may require an adjustment of Vcore, as I don't remember rightoff hand, what voltage that chip requests at startup.
(The SL726web page says 1.3V, but maybe the VID value is identifieddifferently by a desktop motherboard. So, even though it requests1.3V in mobile coding, a desktop regulator may interpret itdifferently.)In any case, if that is indeed what you got, if you want to sellit, there may still be a few people with S478 FSB800 motherboardswho wouldn't mind owning one. PaulA search on GHI and DPSLP, dug up this Intel doc. Pg.9shows how the computer enters SLP#, DPSLP# is pulsed low,and samples GHI# which is fixed at logic 0 (GND).A short time after DPSLP# falling edge, the multiplierchanges to the 'normal' value, in your case x23.Of course, this doesn't solve the details of what thecurrent signals TESTHI11 and TESTHI12 are doing and wherethey are connected. It is just meant to illustrate thecorrect sequence for triggering a multiplier change. Observingthe SLP# signal would help determine that the processoris sleeping, and is ready for the transition.
The Inteldocument mentions the BIOS using S1 sleep state, to causeSLP# to be activated.Paul. At least this Intel doc, documents how to addlogic to a desktop chipset, to allow running a mobile at fullspeed. I find their method of connecting 3.3V logic to the1.5V interfaces, interesting.
